Established 1983

Abbey worked with M. A. Mortenson to help execute the $110 million modernization of Welsh-Ryan Arena. Located within the McGaw Memorial Hall, the 65-year-old structure received a top-to-bottom renovation, providing maximum accessibility and transforming the experience for fans & student-athletes alike. The new facility covers 210,647 square feet, providing 7,000 seats for athletic contests.

The project was particularly interesting because the construction worked around and in the existing McGraw Memorial Hall presenting challenges not typically encountered in cast-in-place concrete construction.

Abbey was on site:

  • Constructing the foundation and floors for the entire building, including a super-flat surface for the state-of-the-art basketball court
  • Pouring slabs on metal decks for the multiple levels of stadium-viewing
  • Shoring the metal decks to assure a flatter slab
  • Delivering on an aggressive construction schedule, allowing the Northwestern Wildcat basketball team to return to the facility after one season of off-campus play
